WASHINGTON - A local couple took to YouTube to invite Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III and his wife to the Marine Corps Ball.
Jimmy Shea and his wife Crystal Starace — both "die-hard Redskins fans" — posted a video on Aug. 22 extending invitations to RG3 and his wife, Rebecca. The Columbia, Md., couple gave a top 10 list on why RG3 and his wife should accompany them to the ball.
RG3 responded to the invitation Sunday, saying he couldn't attend the event -- which Shea in the video says is Nov. 2 -- because it would be the day before the Redskins face off against the San Diego Chargers in a 1 p.m. game.
Dear @jimmydshea, Yes, you & your wife are hilarious and im honored by your invite to the Marine Corps Ball— Robert Griffin III (@RGIII) September 1, 2013
It's the day before a game so I can't make it @jimmydshea— Robert Griffin III (@RGIII) September 1, 2013
Shea later said there's a different ball Nov. 9 he's hoping the Griffins can come to, although he's doubtful they can make it. The 2013 Commandant's Marine Corps Birthday Ball is scheduled for Nov. 9.
@WTOP it's a different one but we doubt they'll be able to make that— Jimmy Shea (@jimmydshea) September 2, 2013
The couple decided that inviting RG3 -- whose parents were both U.S. Army sergeants -- would be a great way to show the quarterback what he means to them as well as the community, according to ABC7.
"It's just so refreshing to see someone so big and so loved to keep his personal life low-key and still be someone that everyone loves," Starace told ABC7.
Shea posted on his YouTube page Sunday, thanking everyone for their support.
"Thanks for sharing the vid everybody! Although we would've loved for them to be able to go, we understand due to the game that they can't," Shea wrote. "They're awesome for responding!"
The Maryland couple's video is not the first time members of the military have invited celebrities to events. Similar requests have been extended to Tim Tebow, Mila Kunis, Justin Timberlake and Scarlett Johansson.
