UMW, city police up patrols at shopping center

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) — University of Mary Washington and Fredericksburg police are increasing patrols at a shopping center owned by the school’s foundation.

The university’s upperclass dorm is located at the Eagle Village shopping center.

The Free Lance-Star (http://bit.ly/QWxfDt ) reports that the increased police presence is in response to several recent incidents, including a shooting earlier this month and a stabbing in late March.

Fredericksburg police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe says incidents have increased steadily since 2009.

Acting university police chief Michael Hall is urging students to step up and participate in community policing.

He says the university police department has reached out to students through informational events and an adopt-a-residence- hall program.
