LAWRENCEVILLE, Va. (AP) — St. Paul’s College trustees are hopeful a deadline extension will stir a buyer for the Lawrenceville campus.
The board has extended until June 25 the deadline for bids to buy the campus. The initial deadline was April 9 and several parties requested more time.
Located in Virginia’s tobacco-growing belt, the private, liberal arts college closed in June 2013 under crushing debt and questions about its governance.
St. Paul’s was founded after the Civil War to educate black men and women in the segregated South. It was founded in 1888 by James Solomon Russell, an Episcopal priest who was born into slavery.
The campus is assessed at more than $12.5 million. It includes dormitories, a president’s house and other residences, administration buildings, and more.
