Investigators looking into whether some students were warned

Wednesday - 1/15/2014, 2:40pm  ET

ROSWELL, New Mexico (AP) -- State police in New Mexico say they're looking into reports that some students may have been warned not to go to school yesterday at a middle school in Roswell.

That's where a 12-year-old boy allegedly opened fire with a sawed-off shotgun, critically wounding an 11-year-old boy and hitting a 13-year-old girl in the arm before a teacher got him to drop the weapon.

Police are disputing a report from a hospital spokesman who said the injured boy was the apparent target. They say they still don't know what prompted the shooting. The state police chief says investigators are combing social media for clues.

Police say the shooting was over in 10 seconds, thanks to an eighth-grade social studies teacher. They say John Masterson immediately stepped in and talked the boy into dropping his weapon, and then held him until authorities arrived.

An attorney for the suspect's family says he was transferred to a psychiatric hospital after a hearing yesterday.

One of the injured, an 11-year-old boy, was flown to a hospital in Lubbock, Texas, in critical condition. New Mexico's governor, Susana Martinez, says the boy has undergone surgery twice. She says the condition of the other victim, a 13-year-old girl, has been upgraded to satisfactory.
