NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) -- The University of New Haven says a suspect is in custody and weapons have been recovered following a report of a man near the Connecticut school's campus with what appeared to be a rifle.
The university says the main campus remains under lockdown as police search buildings. Shelter in place orders have been lifted for its north and south campuses. Several nearby public schools also put out shelter-in-place orders as a precaution.
One freshman says he saw a person in handcuffs being questioned by police across the street from his dorm. But Kyle Gelinas describes the situation as "very calm."
The incident marks the third scare at a Connecticut university in the last month. Last week, nearby Yale University was locked down for six hours in what police later said appeared to be a hoax.
Central Connecticut State University was in lockdown for several hours on Nov. 4 after reports by witnesses of a masked man carrying a gun or sword. Police arrested a student who said he had been wearing a ninja-like Halloween costume and meant no harm. He faces charges including breach of peace.
