DC Charter School Board releases school rankings

WASHINGTON (AP) -- New rankings show a third of the District of Columbia's charter schools that are subject to annual rankings are high-performing "Tier 1" schools.

Data from the D.C. Public Charter School Board released Friday shows more than half of the schools are in the mid-performing "Tier 2" range. Eight schools, or about 12 percent, are low performing. In total, 68 schools were ranked.

The charter schools are scored on a 100-point scale. They are measured on student achievement on standardized tests, attendance and the re-enrollment rates for families.

Tier 1 schools are exempted from certain oversight requirements and are eligible rewards that include priority for surplus city school buildings. Tier 3 schools are subject to greater scrutiny and can be closed if they don't improve.

Many charter schools were not ranked.
