SUV hits 5 students near NYC school

Thursday - 9/12/2013, 4:20pm  ET

NEW YORK (AP) -- An everyday walk to school turned into a horror story on Thursday, when an SUV jumped a curb and plowed into a handful of middle school students near their New York City school.

Authorities said the five students from Queens were hospitalized in stable condition after the incident, which happened shortly before 8 a.m. about a block from Intermediate School 73-Q. Their injuries were not life-threatening.

City Councilmember Elizabeth Crowley said a parent was dropping off his child when he apparently hit the gas pedal instead of the brake.

Security camera footage from the street showed the vehicle mowing down a parking meter and a street sign as it came over the curb, knocking down one girl from behind as her companions moved aside.

A group of men lifted the vehicle while freeing two of the students.

"I heard people screaming, 'Oh my God! Oh my God!' and I saw two little girls underneath the car," said David Foubister, 40, a truck driver who was out walking his dog, according to the New York Post.

A rescuer, Lynx Garcia, said one girl had a twisted leg and a gash on her thigh.

The Department of Education said one of the students is 12; the others are 13.
