LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) -- Lynchburg College plans to open a branch campus on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia.
The Jessie Ball duPont Fund awarded a $95,000 grant to the college this week to establish the off-site school that will accommodate up to 100 students per semester.
The News & Advance (http://bit.ly/14ET9vN ) reports the grant will be used for computer equipment, classroom and office furnishings, marketing and recruitment, and worker salaries. The program won't produce revenue for Lynchburg College, but Dean of Graduate Studies Edward Polloway says it will give students a unique opportunity.
Since 2003, Lynchburg College has offered online courses in special education, counseling and education in St. Lucia and the eastern Caribbean.
Some students already have visited St. Lucia as part of the college's international service-learning program established in 2008.
