Monday - 7/15/2013, 1:40pm  ET

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- The Virginia Commonwealth University Health System plans to replace its aging pediatric psychiatric center with a new facility.

The health system announced Monday that it will seek state and zoning approval to build the new facility on the Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU's Brook Road campus.

The existing 50-year-old Virginia Treatment Center for Children is located on VCU Medical Center's downtown campus.

The health system says the new facility would allow development of new programs and services.

If approved, the project is expected to be completed in about three years.
