ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- A former U.S. Naval Academy instructor has been sentenced to two months in jail and a $60,000 fine for an incident involving two female midshipmen.
Marine Maj. Mark Thompson was convicted last week of committing indecent acts, fraternization and conduct unbecoming an officer. He was acquitted of aggravated sexual assault.
The academy said Monday that he will serve 60 days confinement beginning immediately at a military jail in Chesapeake, Va. He also was fined $2,500 a month for two years and will have a reprimand on his record.
Thompson's future status will be evaluated by the Marine Corps after the academy's superintendent reviews the trial record.
The charges relate to a 2011 incident when two female midshipmen went to Thompson's apartment after drinking alcohol. One reported Thompson assaulted her.
