School change ahead for 500 Fairfax County students

WASHINGTON – Some students in Fairfax County will have to plan on going to a different school, starting in 2014.

About 500 students will be changing schools in 2014, because of new boundaries in the county that were approved by the school board on Thursday.

The plan is to move students away from an overcrowded Fairfax High School, as well as its feeder school, Lanier Middle School. Right now, Fairfax High has 2,600 students – 9 percent above capacity. The Washington Post reports that there was concern enrollment could shoot past 3,000 within 5 years.

The school board approved the plan Thursday, despite objections from those who said it created too much uncertainty for parents and students.
