ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) -- A high school student injured in a northern New Mexico bus crash has undergone surgery to repair a broken jaw.
Mesa Vista superintendent Tracie Phillips said Tuesday that the 16-year-old female student successfully came out of surgery around 2 a.m. She and eight other students were injured Monday after authorities said their school bus went off a road and crashed in an embankment near La Madera in Carson National Forest.
Investigators say the driver, 69-year-old Pat Valdez, died at the scene. The cause of the crash is still unknown.
Philips says another student was in surgery at the University of New Mexico Hospital for a broken femur, and an 8-year-old student may undergo surgery for broken vertebrae.
