URBANA, Md. (AP) -- The stepfather of a University of Maryland student wounded by a housemate says his stepson is recovering from the shooting and will return to school.
Christian Merz (mgertz) said Wednesday that 22-year-old Neal Oa was shot in the leg early Tuesday morning while running from Dayvon Green. Police say Green shot and killed another housemate before fatally shooting himself.
Merz says his stepson had known his housemates only since last summer. He says Oa considered Green to be "pretty smart" but "a little different."
Police say Green's family told investigators that Green had been prescribed medication for a mental illness.
Merz says his stepson was lucky. He says his family has suffered but that the families of Green and slain housemate Stephen Rane are suffering more.
