New Seattle school zone tickets adding up

Monday - 1/14/2013, 10:23am  ET

SEATTLE (AP) - In the first two weeks last month when tickets were automatically issued to drivers photographed speeding in four Seattle school zones, about 3,300 violation notices were mailed out.

At $189 a ticket, that's more than half a million dollars.

A million a month in ticket revenues is more than the automated camera system was expected to bring in.

The Seattle Times reports ( http://bit.ly/RSoXvw) city officials say the school zone cameras are intended to improve safety not revenue. They expect the number of tickets will drop as drivers observe the limit of 20 miles per hour during school hours.
