Westfield High band to play in Tournament of Roses parade

WASHINGTON – While most people haven’t made plans for New Year’s 2013, 225 Fairfax County high schoolers already know their 2014 plans.

The Westfield High School Marching Bulldogs has been chosen to perform in the 2014 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, Calif.

“Some of them have been studying their instruments since fifth-grade, fourth- grade, and there is a correlation between academic achievement and involvement in music. It’s irrefutable, and this is the pay off,” said Steve Panoff, director of the Chantilly, Va. band.

But, while band members celebrate, the moment is still 14 months away. The band and Panoff are more focused on two competitions this coming weekend.

“We’re going over to Manassas Park High School Saturday afternoon, and Saturday night down to Stafford for a big competition down there,” said Panoff.
