RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A sixth-grade English teacher from Chesapeake has been named Virginia's Teacher of the Year.
The Virginia Department of Education says Kathy Galford of Greenbrier Middle School was named Virginia's top educator at a Friday night ceremony in Richmond.
The Virginian-Pilot reports that as the state's teacher of the year, Galford will get an unspecified monetary award, a classroom technology package and opportunities for continued education.
Galford also will next represent the state in the 2013 National Teacher of the Year competition. That award is chosen by a selection committee representing national education organizations. The national winner will be announced at the White House next spring.(Copyright 2012 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
