WASHINGTON - Sí, Sen. Tim Kaine puede.
During the contentious debate about immigration reform, the Virginia Democrat made his voice stick out Tuesday when he took to the Senate floor and delivered a speech in Spanish.
Kaine becomes the first Senator in modern history to make a floor speech entirely in Spanish, according to the Washington Post.
"I ask unanimous consent that I be able to deliver a floor speech on immigration reform in Spanish," he requested in English.
After that, it was all español.
Kaine pointed out that the language has been spoken in North America since Spanish missionaries founded St. Augustine, Fla., in the 1500s.
He also made the case that the U.S. is home to nearly 40 million Spanish speakers, and many of them have a lot at stake in this debate.
In response to the speech, Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., tweeted: "Show off." He followed up with a tweet in Spanish.
