House bill would protect believers in traditional marriage

Monday - 2/10/2014, 10:00pm  ET

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Congressman Raul Labrador says he and some other conservatives fear that the Obama administration will use the federal government to discriminate against Americans who believe that marriage should only be the union of a man and a woman.

The Idaho Republican has introduced the "Marriage and Religious Freedom Act," which has about 100 co-sponsors. It would prohibit punitive federal action based on a person's religious belief in traditional marriage and sexual morality.

Labrador says he doesn't want churches to lose their tax-exempt status or religious individuals to be denied federal jobs and benefits for opposing gay marriage.
