6 congressmen oppose Atlantic gas, oil exploration

Friday - 5/31/2013, 4:20am  ET

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- A half-dozen congressmen from the Carolinas and Virginia are urging Interior Secretary Sally Jewel to use "extreme caution" when considering any proposals for oil and gas exploration in Atlantic waters.

The letter is intended to counter appeals from Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and the governors from North Carolina and South Carolina. They support exploration of energy resources on the Outer Continental Shelf. Virginia's two congressmen embraced the same policy last week.

The six congressmen, however, wrote that the U.S. should pursue an energy policy that supports alternative energy sources and one that does not pose a threat to the environment.

The congressmen are Virginia's Robert C. "Bobby" Scott, Jim Moran and Gerald E. Connolly; South Carolina's James E. Clyburn; and North Carolina's David Price and Melvin L. Watt.
