NATO’s new chief says relations with Russia could improve

BRUSSELS (AP) — NATO’s new chief is calling on Russia to comply with international law, but says there’s now a chance for improved relations between Moscow and the West.

The alliance’s new secretary-general, Jens Stoltenberg, says, “We see opportunity in the cease-fire that has now been established in the eastern Ukraine.”

Stoltenberg, a former Norwegian prime minister, told reporters he personally sees no contradiction between a strong NATO and the quest for better relations with Russia.

He spoke at a news conference on his first day as NATO’s top civilian leader.
