Manassas City Council considers reopening lake

MANASSAS, Va. (AP) — The Manassas City Council is considering reopening Lake Manassas to the public for fishing and boating.

The Washington Post (http://wapo.st/1rtQDG4 ) reports lawmakers voted Tuesday to have staff members look at options for opening the lake for recreation. Staff is expected to report back to the council in about six months.

The lake supplies drinking water to about 100,000 residents of Manassas, Manassas Park and Prince William.

The city eliminated public access to the lake in the 1990s and banned boating in 2004.

One council member who supports reopening the lake says the city is spending $80,000 to $100,000 a year to keep people off the lake. But another lawmaker says it would cost residents to re-open the lake even though most of the people using it would not be residents.
