Outgoing DC mayor nominates new inspector general

WASHINGTON (AP) — A 26-year Navy veteran and longtime internal Navy watchdog has been nominated to serve as the District of Columbia’s new inspector general.

Mayor Vincent Gray announced the nomination of Daniel Lucas on Thursday. Lucas will have to be confirmed by the D.C. Council, which includes two members vying for Gray’s job. Councilmember Muriel Bowser defeated Gray in the April Democratic primary, and independent Councilmember David Catania is also running.

Gray says the inspector general is supposed to be “free from any political influence,” which makes the timing of the nomination appropriate.

Lucas would replace Charles Willoughby, who retired in May. The inspector general’s role is to investigate waste, fraud and abuse in city government. Lucas is currently a deputy inspector general with the Naval Sea Systems Command.
