Special election set in SW Va. delegate district

BRISTOL, Va. (AP) — A special election has been set for December in a House of Delegates district in southwest Virginia.

The Bristol Herald Courier (http://bit.ly/1m9jiRW) reports House Speaker William Howell on Tuesday set Dec. 9 for the special election to replace Republican 4th District Delegate Ben Chafin.

Howell says the special election allows time to have the new delegate sworn in for the start of the 2015 general session. Political parties have until Oct. 9 to nominate a candidate.

Chafin won a special election in August for the 38th Senate District seat held by Democrat Phillip Puckett, who resigned in June. Chafin was a delegate for less than a year.

The 4th District includes Dickenson County and parts of Russell, Washington and Wise counties.
