WARREN, Mich. (AP) — More than six inches of rain have flooded basements and left a number of highways and streets impassable in southeastern Michigan.
State officials are warning commuters against driving in affected areas. Michigan State Police troopers have been assisting stranded motorists and clearing vehicles from the roads. State police say there have been no reports of people missing, but divers have been searching flooded freeways to be sure.
The National Weather Service says the rains in the Detroit area were record-setting. More than four and a half inches fell at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in the suburb of Romulus, while the highest report was 6.25 inches, also in suburban Detroit.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected today, but not as severe as Monday. The weather service says about 1/4-inch of rain could fall.
