PITTSBURGH (AP) — Former President Bill Clinton spoke fondly of his unlikely friendship with Richard Mellon Scaife at a memorial, and says his relationship with the billionaire Mellon banking heir who published the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review could be a lesson conflict resolution.
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports (http://bit.ly/1o22KLi ) Clinton spoke to a crowd of about 150 Trib Total Media employees gathered Saturday at Scaife’s boyhood home. Scaife died July 4 at the age of 82.
Scaife’s opposition to Clinton marked much of his presidency. But after Clinton left office in 2001 the two became friends. Scaife supported Clinton’s foundation and Hillary Rodham Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign.
Clinton told the crowd “our differences are important” and “they help us to define who we are, but they don’t have to keep us at arm’s length from others.”
