Carol Schwartz to run for DC mayor as independent

Monday - 6/9/2014, 5:10pm  ET

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Former D.C. Councilmember Carol Schwartz says she is running as an independent for mayor.

Schwartz, who spent 16 years on the D.C. Council, announced Monday that she will run. The 70-year-old Schwartz has been out of politics since losing her 2008 re-election bid.

This is Schwartz's fifth bid for mayor. She last ran for the office in 2002. At the time, she ran as a Republican.

Schwartz said she was compelled to join the race after becoming dissatisfied with the leading candidates, Democratic nominee Muriel Bowser and independent David Catania.

Both Bowser and Catania are current D.C. Council members.

The election is Nov. 4. The winner will replace current Mayor Vincent Gray.
