Younger members split with GOP on social issues

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — A younger generation of Republicans is increasingly at odds with party leadership when it comes to social issues like gay marriage and legalizing marijuana.

That’s why a group like the Tampa Bay Young Republicans recently invited huge Democratic Party donor John Morgan to talk to the group about his effort to legalize medical marijuana in Florida.

The same group last year put out a statement praising the Supreme Court in a ruling that was a victory for gay marriage advocates.

And it’s not just Florida. The successful push to legalize gay marriage in Minnesota was backed by several prominent younger Republicans. And in Colorado, the spokesman for a group that pushed to legalize marijuana was a Republican activist.
