FORT BRAGG, N.C. (AP) -- An Army captain has testified that a brigadier general threatened to kill her and her family if she ever told anyone about their three-year affair.
The tearful testimony came on the opening day of the court-martial of Jeffrey Sinclair at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. Prosecutors say Sinclair used his authority to intimidate and coerce the captain into sex. He has already pleaded guilty to adultery and other charges that could send him to prison for up to 15 years.
In opening statements, lawyers for Sinclair read to the jury some excerpts from the accuser's diary, written during the affair. A defense lawyer said that even after Sinclair was alleged to have threatened to kill her loved ones, the captain wrote of her desire for him -- and the only fear she expressed was that he might still love his wife.
The trial comes as the Pentagon is under heavy pressure to deal with rape and other sexual misconduct in the ranks.
