German defense minister announces overhaul

Thursday - 2/20/2014, 8:00am  ET

BERLIN (AP) -- Germany's new defense chief has announced an overhaul of her ministry citing serious mismanagement of arms projects.

Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen dismissed two senior officials Thursday and said she plans to bring in external advisers after concluding that there are serious problems with all major procurement programs.

These include the aerial reconnaissance system ISIS, the military transport plane A400M and the Euro Hawk drone.

Von der Leyen, who took over from Thomas de Maiziere in Chancellor Angela Merkel's new Cabinet, says Germany's military needs a "fresh start" in planning arms projects.

De Maiziere is now interior minister.
