ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The U.S. Naval Academy has identified the midshipman found dead after an automobile accident in a creek. He's Naval Academy Midshipman 1st Class Max Allen, 25, of Chesterfield, Va.

"The Naval Academy is deeply saddened by the tragic death of Midshipman Max Allen. It is painful to lose a member of our Naval Academy family, and as we attempt to better understand this tremendous loss, we offer our deepest condolences to Max's family, close friends, classmates and company mates during this extremely difficult time," says Naval Academy Superintendent Vice Adm. Michael Miller, in a news release.

The academy said his white SUV was found in College Creek, near the Nimitz library on academy grounds in Annapolis Sunday.

An Anne Arundel County Fire Department dive team searched the vehicle, and discovered Allen's body underwater near the seawall and near the vehicle.

The search was initiated when a passerby noticed a concrete bollard and a steel chain along McNair Road was missing.

The academy says the midshipman's family has been notified. The school withheld the victim's identity for 24 hours.

Allen was an oceanography major and assigned to become a naval flight officer after graduation and commissioning in May, a news release from the academy says.

While the vehicle is being examined by Naval Criminal Investigative Service and Naval Support Activity Annapolis Police, indications are that Allen was in an accident.
