13 killed in attacks in Iraq; militants seize soldiers

Sunday - 1/26/2014, 5:30pm  ET

BAGHDAD (AP) -- Car bombings and shootings have killed at least 13 people across Iraq today.

And authorities say militants kidnapped five soldiers in Anbar province, where Iraqi troops are battling fighters linked to al-Qaida. Anbar's deputy governor says several army vehicles were either destroyed or seized by gunmen.

Gunmen also attacked a security checkpoint in Baghdad's western suburbs, killing four soldiers. A former army officer and his wife were killed in a drive-by shooting in Baghdad. And police found three bodies around the capital with their hands and feet tied, all killed by what appeared to be close-range gunshots to the head.

In other violence today, officials in the northern city of Kirkuk (keer-KOOK') say three car bombs exploded simultaneously in separate residential neighborhoods, killing four people and wounding.

Another car bomb went off near a Sunni mosque 20 miles north of Baghdad, killing three people and wounding 13 others.
