ANKARA, Turkey (AP) -- Turkey's state-run agency says court officials have formally arrested eight people who were detained for questioning this week as part of a major corruption probe targeting allies of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The investigation, which has also ensnared sons of three government ministers, comes amid a power struggle between Erdogan's government and an influential U.S.-based Muslim cleric, Fetullah Gulen, who has a strong following in Turkey.

The Anadolu Agency said Friday the eight who were ordered jailed include the brother of the mayor of an Istanbul district, which is an Erdogan stronghold. It says they face possible bribery charges.

Anadolu says 27 other people were also being questioned by court officials.

Erdogan has denounced the probe as a plot to harm his government.
