Campaign signs must come down

WASHINGTON — The votes are in, the election has passed and now it is time for all those campaign signs to come down.

As usual during election season, hundreds of political signs were stuck in the ground, plastered with slogans and names of candidates.

But certain neighborhoods are strict when it comes to promptly removing them. Each jurisdiction has its own policy.

For instance in Fairfax County, following an election, signs must be taken down within 15 days.

In Montgomery County, campaign signs can be up for 30 days.

D.C. also has a 30 day limit for political signs.

People who break the rules won’t only annoy their neighbors, they may also face some pretty steep fines.

Montgomery County can issue $500 tickets for each sign in violation, according to the local statute.

In Fairfax County, residents are supposed to hand over a $100 deposit before putting up any signs. They get the money back if they follow the rules. If not, the $100 goes to the county.
