Nebraska Democrats win first House seat since 1992

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Bucking a national trend for Republicans, Democrats have won a U.S. House seat in Nebraska for the first time since 1992, defeating 16-year Republican incumbent Rep. Lee Terry.

Terry conceded Wednesday afternoon to challenger Brad Ashford, who was ahead by 4,000 votes in the Omaha-area district.

Democrats bashed Terry for his remark last year that he would not give up his congressional pay during a government shutdown because he “has a nice house and a kid in college.”

The Republican also drew criticism for an ad blaming Ashford for the release last year of an inmate who later killed four people. As a state senator, Ashford led a legislative committee that helped approve a law that cuts prison sentences for time served. Terry had defended the ad.
