ATLANTA (AP) — Democrats hold early voting leads in a handful of states that will help determine who controls the U.S. Senate in January.
But Republicans have narrowed their historical gap in Iowa, where Joni Ernst is vying for a Democratic-held Senate seat. The GOP also maintains that its overall strength in North Carolina and Louisiana still will prevail over the early-vote advantages for Democratic Sens. Kay Hagan and Mary Landrieu.
Nationally, almost 8.6 million Americans have cast ballots in 27 states. In 2010, almost 27 million people cast ballots before the midterm elections.
The early-vote jockeying will continue through Nov. 4 as both sides look to claim momentum. Republicans need six more seats to control the Senate for the final two years of President Barack Obama’s administration.
