HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is reminding leaders of cities and towns that he kept his promise nearly four years ago and didn’t cut state aid to balance the budget.

The Democrat is in a close re-election battle against Republican Tom Foley. Malloy told the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities on Tuesday that if he loses in November, “it’s because I kept my fidelity to you.” Malloy says other states have shifted the burden of their budget deficits to cities and towns, resulting in cuts in local services or higher local taxes.

Greenwich businessman Foley promised the group he won’t cut aid to cities and towns either. He says Connecticut can solve its budget problems at the state level without hurting municipalities.

Foley also pledged to stop new state mandates.
