Special election to fill Cantor’s seat set for November

WASHINGTON – The special election to fill former Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s House seat will be in November.

Tuesday, Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced the Nov. 4 election date, the same day as the general election.

Cantor announced last week that he would step down from his seat Aug. 18 and would not serve out the remainder of his term serving Virginia’s 7th District.

Voters will elect both Cantor’s short-term replacement and his successor to a full two-year term on the same day.

In a statement, McAuliffe said holding the two elections simultaneously would be the best use of state resources and ensure Virginians are represented during the lame duck session after the November election.

The 7th District stretches from Henrico County and suburban Richmond through Culpeper County.

Cantor lost his primary re-election bid to a little-known professor, who garnered substantial support from tea party activists. He also resigned his post as majority leader of the House.
