KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Tensions are escalating over what Western officials had hoped would be a smooth transfer of power in Afghanistan. Hundreds of Afghans took to the streets today to protest against alleged fraud in last week’s presidential runoff, bringing out hundreds of riot police.
Former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah has accused electoral officials and others of trying to rig the vote against him and he says he won’t recognize the results, the first of which are due July 2.
The protest, while peaceful, forced a closure of the airport road.
While the vote was relatively peaceful, the Taliban had warned people not to participate and carried out a handful of attacks in different parts of the country.
