LOS ANGELES (AP) — Attorney Bobby Shriver, a nephew of President John F. Kennedy, will face a former state lawmaker in November for a Los Angeles County supervisor seat.
Shriver, 60, a former Santa Monica mayor, finished behind Sheila Kuehl, a fellow Democrat, Tuesday to advance to the general election in the nonpartisan race. The two beat six others to replace Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, who has served 23 years before term limits put in place in 2002 forced him to retire.
“We’ve all been running hard,” Shriver said. “We’ll just run hard again, right through to November, and hope that the people hear our story, and that we’ll win.”
Kuehl won about 36 percent of the vote while Shriver had about 29 percent.
Kuehl, 63, the first openly gay member of the state Legislature, attributed her showing to previously representing much of the district in Sacramento.
“I always considered myself the front-runner,” Kuehl said. “When people have voted for you before, they feel more comfortable voting for you again.”
Shriver is the eldest child of the late R. Sargent Shriver, who founded the Peace Corps, and Eunice Kennedy Shriver. His mother, who founded Special Olympics, was a sister of JFK, and Sens. Robert Kennedy and Edward Kennedy. He’s also the brother of former California first lady Maria Shriver.
The district of 2 million residents stretches from coastal communities of Malibu, Pacific Palisades and Santa Monica to Beverly Hills, Hollywood and parts of the San Fernando Valley. The five supervisors represent 10 million residents and oversee about a $25 billion budget.
