Virginia AG candidates separated by 17 votes

WASHINGTON – Virginia’s race for attorney general is still too close to call, and it’s only gotten closer as time has passed.

Republican Mark Obenshain holds a 17-vote lead over Democrat Mark Herring in the statewide election, according to unofficial results from the Virginia State Board of Elections.

More than 2 million votes were cast in the contest.

The Washington Post reports canvassing efforts and a small number of mistakes have caused the vote count to shift, and more changes are likely to come as provisional ballots are unreported in Fairfax County and may be incomplete in Richmond.

The state board of elections is expected to certify election results later this month, after which the trailing candidate is likely to request a recount.
