RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Gov. Bob McDonnell has scheduled a special election for Aug. 6 to fill the seat of state Sen. Harry Blevins of Chesapeake.
The 77-year-old Blevins, a Republican, announced earlier this month that he is retiring effective Aug. 5. He cited unspecified health issues as his reason for stepping down with two years left on his four-year term.
McDonnell said Wednesday that having the special election a day after Blevins' retirement will ensure continuity of representation.
Republican Del. John Cosgrove already has announced his candidacy for Blevins' seat. Cosgrave succeeded Blevins in the House of Delegates.
