Homeless groups plan rally, march for DC election

Saturday - 4/13/2013, 6:30am  ET

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Homeless people are planning to rally and march in Washington to declare they are voters, along with religious and community advocates who are urging District of Columbia officials to provide adequate housing.

The Washington Interfaith Network, the homeless advocacy group SHARC and other groups are coordinating the rally and march on Saturday.

Organizers say they want to dispel the myth that homeless people don't vote and demand respect as D.C. citizens. Participants plan to wear t-shirts with the message "I Am a Voter."

The rally begins Saturday at 11 a.m. at a shelter parking lot on 2nd Street, NW. They will march to the city's early voting location at One Judiciary Square for the special election for a D.C. Council seat.
