More than 430,000 Marylanders cast early ballots

Saturday - 11/3/2012, 2:26pm  ET

BALTIMORE - Nearly twice as many Marylanders voted early this year compared with the gubernatorial election in 2010.

The Baltimore Sun ( http://bsun.md/QdDfXE) reports 430,573 Maryland voters had cast ballots by the time the polls closed to early voting Friday night. That's 11.6 percent of eligible voters.

Some lawmakers say they will push to keep polls open even longer for early voting in the future. They want to see wait times reduced to 15 minutes or less.

The state opened 46 locations for early voting. That included at least one in every county.

Early voting was scheduled to run from last Saturday through Thursday. But due to Hurricane Sandy, Gov. Martin O'Malley closed voting centers Monday and Tuesday. Instead, he extended voting hours and added voting on Friday after the storm.
