About the issue: Abortion

(AP) - The divisive issues of abortion and birth control flare up at times in the presidential campaign despite the two candidates' reluctance to dwell on them.

Abortion opponents want to see the Supreme Court decision establishing a right to abortion reversed. If a vacancy occurs on the Supreme Court, the next president could have great influence on the abortion issue through his nominee.

President Barack Obama supports a right to abortion. Republican Mitt Romney wants the states to be allowed to ban abortion.

Obama's health care law requires that contraceptives be available for free for women in workplace health plans. Some faith-based employers, such as Roman Catholic hospitals, say this violates their religious freedom.
