MADRID (AP) — The British parents who were pursued by police for taking their critically ill son out of a British hospital for treatment in another country have reunited with the child after they were released from a prison in Spain.
A hospital spokeswoman says the parents visited five-year-old Ashya King at a hospital in the Spanish city of Malaga (MAL’-uh-guh). But local authorities received word from British officials that they shouldn’t be allowed to take him out of the hospital. A hospital spokeswoman says it’s because a British judge has made the child a ward of the court.
The parents were sought by police on child cruelty charges after they took Ashya, who has been treated for a brain tumor, out of a British hospital against doctors’ advice. They then traveled to Spain where they planned to sell a property to pay for proton beam radiation therapy in the Czech Republic or the United States.
They were arrested on Saturday and were being held in a prison near Madrid pending a British extradition request, but were released after U.K. authorities dropped the charges against them.
