Study shows men worse at remembering names, dates

WASHINGTON -- Men may have a legitimate excuse for forgetting birthdays, anniversaries and other details.

A study involving more than 48,000 people in Norway reveals men have more trouble than women remembering names and dates.

The study results, published in BMC Psychology, asked participants memory-related questions. Those questions included what men and women remembered happening a few minutes ago, a year ago and more. The study controlled for anxiety, depression, age and other factors.

"It was surprising to see that men forget more than women. ... It was also surprising to see that men are just as forgetful whether they are 30 or 60 years old. The results were unambiguous," says Prof. Jostein Holmen of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, in a press release.

The findings will be used in a long term study on dementia.
