Eating healthy can put pressure on the wallet

WASHINGTON — Eat healthy or pay a price, right? But the actual cost to make it happen may make it tough. The Harvard School of Public Health set out to see just how much it really costs to eat healthy.

They found that people with diets rich in healthy diets of fruits, vegetables, fish and nuts spend $1.50 a day more than folks who eat processed foods, meats and saturated fats. That may not sound like a lot, but it adds up to about $550 a year, and that can be tough for families struggling to make ends meet.

The study suggests creating ways to make it easier to produce healthy foods and make them more readily available.
