WASHINGTON - Forget soaking up the sun's rays. If you want to make your skin glow, just open the fridge, and take out some red cabbage, beets and lemons.

MindBodyGreen.com nutritionist Dana James says red cabbage contains phytonutrients - from the deep red color - and they can help beat wrinkles, according to Yahoo.com.

Deep, dark beets are great for skin tone. They stimulate the lymphatic system and remove waste from our cells. And they help your blood carry more oxygen and that'll brighten up your skin tone too.

And then there are lemons, which help remove toxins and old hormones making it less likely that your skin will break out. Lemons also kill bacteria in the mouth and intestines. James suggests starting the day off by squeezing a half lemon into a mug of hot water.

Summer sun can beat up your skin. But there's one thing you can drink to fend off those damaging rays: tomato juice.

James says an 8-ounce glass of tomato juice can give you a sun protection factor of 5. Of course, you'll want to smear on the sunscreen too.

Not a fan? Try pomegranate juice, which can boost the sun protection factor of sunscreen by up to 25 percent.

If you do get too much sun, try some bell peppers at dinnertime. They contain the antioxidant capsiate, which decreases damage to your skin from UVB rays and can also help sunburn swelling.
