Sunday - 4/7/2013, 1:50pm  ET

HARRISONBURG, Va. (AP) -- James Madison University is the latest Virginia school to report a mumps case.

The university says one student was treated for contagious viral infection. It is advising students to take precautions and to stay home if they are ill to avoid spreading the virus.

The University of Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth issued similar advisories last month after several cases of mumps were confirmed on their campuses.

Central Shenandoah Health District director Dr. Doug Larsen tells The Daily News-Record (http://bit.ly/17l73Hd ) that the virus thrives on college and university campuses.

Larsen says there is a large number of people who live in close quarters or share drinks or lip balm.
