Scam targets Washington Post readers

WASHINGTON — The Washington Post is alerting its subscribers to a scam aimed at getting the members to pay a third party for the renewal of the paper.

The Post sent emails to subscribers Thursday letting them know about fraudulent renewal notices from a company called Readers Payment Service. The scammers say a payment nearly twice the price of a Post subscription will allow people to renew their home delivery subscription or start a new subscription.

The invoice requests payment of $599.95 or $299.98. The Post’s most expensive subscription package costs $149, according to its website.

The Post’s bills or notices will include the following:

  • A payment address of PO Box 13669 Philadelphia, PA
  • A phone number for questions 202-334-6100 or 800-477-4679
  • Allow online payments to go to its website.

If notices or bills do not include the information, they are unauthorized and may be fraudulent, according to the Post’s alert.

The fraudulent note is a payment address of White City, Oregon.

“The companies sending out the unauthorized renewal notices have no access to our customer records. They do not necessarily know that you are a subscriber to The Washington Post,” says the email from The Post.
